KUALA LUMPUR, 11 July 2014 – MERCY Malaysia will be providing immediate response to the humanitarian crisis in the Gaza Strip by providing medical supplies including essential medicines, surgical sutures, medical disposables and equipment to local hospitals and medical centres. MERCY Malaysia will be working with its long term local partners, Al-Emaar Society, El-Wafa Rehabilitation Team and Palestinian Orphans Home Association to provide much needed medical assistance as well as to assess other needs of the affected population such as food and nutritional needs.
The population of Palestine is estimated to be 1,816,379 are currently being attacked by Israel since Monday, 7 July 2014. ‘Operation Protective Edge’ was launched by the Israeli Defense Forces towards the Gaza Strip with more than 440 air, artillery and rocket attacks within 24 hours which has killed 90 Palestinians (2/3 of them are women and children under 15 years) and more than 500 people have been injured. MERCY Malaysia’s Country Coordinator, Dr Khamis Elessi witnessed the intensity of the barrage and air-strikes which has been increasing since Monday and shows no signs of abating.
Due to this worsening situation, MERCY Malaysia has activated its “Palestine Relief Fund” and is collaborating with Media Prima Berhad to raise fund for the affected population in the Gaza Strip. MERCY Malaysia is urging Malaysian’s to support its efforts to provide assistance to those in need. MERCY Malaysia welcomes any parties interested to collaborate with us for this appeal.

How is MERCY Malaysia funded?
To ensure independence and impartiality, MERCY Malaysia relies on donations from the general public for financial support. A portion of our income is obtained from institutional donors, individual government grants and other international organizations, which are given on project basis. MERCY Malaysia spends 80% if its income in carrying out its relief operations and support.
