Highlights
At the request of the Emergency Relief Coordinator, the Humanitarian Coordinator and partners, the Logistics Cluster has been activated. The first meeting was held Wednesday, 30 July. The cluster will be available to facilitate the entry of relief supplies by all humanitarian partners to Gaza.
While WFP has been able to bring supplies to Gaza, there remain significant constraints within Gaza in bringing food to distribution locations due to security conditions.
As of Thursday, WFP has reached 255,654 conflict affected people in Gaza with emergency food assistance. This is an increase of more than 50,000 people in two days. The emergency relief includes:
Emergency ready-to-eat food for 229,270 displaced people who have taken refuge in UNRWA schools used as shelters and to 10,647 people that are sheltered in public shelters.
Emergency electronic food vouchers to 2,283 displaced families – approximately 13,698 people – who are living with host families.
A total of 2,039 patients and staff in hospitals continue to be assisted with emergency food rations.
Situation Update
Four weeks into the conflict in Gaza, the humanitarian situation is rapidly deteriorating, with increased pressure on access to food, clean water, basic sanitation and hygiene.
Following the hit on the power plant, electricity cuts are causing widespread problems in Gaza. Bakeries are facing increasing pressure due to rapidly increasing demands, as people cannot bake bread in their homes because of the lack of electricity, while the needs for displaced people continue to rise. The electricity shortages also threaten clean water and sanitation in Gaza.
The date bar factory that was a partner of WFP for years and provided school children with food in both the West Bank and Gaza was hit on 30 July and has burned down.
A total of 14 WFP trucks entered Gaza Thursday with 174.5 metric tonnes (mt) of canned meat, milk, biscuits, canned peas, as well as wheat flour for WFP contracted bakeries. Between Friday and Sunday, an additional 16 WFP trucks are expected to enter Gaza.
