15 MARCH 2015

Our spokesperson Chris Gunness has the following to say on the situation in Yarmouk Camp

"UNRWA was not able to distribute humanitarian assistance in Yarmouk today, 15 March.

"UNRWA is encouraged by the recent resumption of its food distribution to Yarmouk's civilians and appreciates the Syrian authorities' substantial efforts to make possible this positive development. UNRWA is seeking assurances that the facilitation of its humanitarian efforts inside Yarmouk will be sustained indefinitely, for the sake of the civilians trapped there.

"To address the profound suffering experienced by civilians trapped in Yarmouk, UNRWA calls for the distribution of humanitarian assistance to continue without interruption. If facilitation and safe conditions are assured and maintained, UNRWA has the capacity fully to meet the humanitarian needs of civilians in Yarmouk."

14 MARCH 2015

"UNRWA distributed food parcels and jars of jam to 246 families in Yarmouk yesterday, 14 March. 108 civilians were also treated by UNRWA medical personnel at the temporary health point. This was the eighth day of distribution since 5 March, following a prolonged period of interruption between 6 December, 2014 and 4 March, 2015.

"Syrian authorities and GAPAR directed UNRWA to enter Yarmouk via Tadhamon, an adjacent neighbourhood to the east. With the active facilitation and support of Syrian authorities, UNRWA used this route to safely reach the distribution area in the Malak area of Palestine Street, inside Yarmouk. Civilians received food parcels in a calm and orderly manner throughout the day, with no security incidents.

"The distribution team arrived at the staging area in Tadhamon at 10:27, with distribution commencing at 12:20 and concluding at 16:25. The distribution team returned safely to the UNRWA Syria Field Office at 17:00.
